| Day 1 (Thursday): Departure from your home airport |
|

| Day 2 (Friday): Arrival in Rio – and to the
Sugar Loaf right away! |
|

|
| After pick-up and check-in, a small
tour in the vicinity of the hotel will familiarize you with the particularities
and the first typically Brazilian features, such as tropical drinks
and snacks.

| Afternoon ascent to the Sugarloaf.
We recommend an evening stroll along the beach of Copacabana.
With luck, you
can experience how people spontaneously dance samba to live music at the
coconut stalls. |

| Day 3 (Saturday): Rio prepares for carnival |
|
| |
|
 |
Morning city tour and lunch
joined by the author of the Dumont-Guide on Brazil. He shows you
his favorite secret places, and his city from above: you’ll
take the cog railway to the Corcovado. |

Afternoon visit to the picturesque
Blocos of transvestites on the beach in Ipanema. Take your swimsuit,
and join the rich and the famous of Rio's famous beach of Ipanema. |

Evening optional visit to
the elegant ball at the Hotel Copacabana Palace (smoking and elegant
evening dress required! Masks and other elegant disguises are welcome,
and can easily be found in Rio. Dancing-teachers available.). Those
who do not participate in the ball, can make use of the tour guide’s
expertise to explore Rio’s nightlife (optional: Rio by night!). |

| Day 4 (Sunday): Carnival in Rio |
|
| |
|
|
Morning visit to the Botanical Gardens, led by a German biologist.
Afternoon opportunity for a tour through a favela, or a guided walk through
the Botanical Garden (optional).
Or you can do with the Sunday afternoon as the Cariocas do: the beach-avenue
is closed to motorized traffic and those who can take a bike (optional, about
5 euros per hour) or jog along here. Later you can drink a coco-nut in one
of the kiosks, where in the evenings often music is played. |

At night attend the grand parade in Sambódromo, wearing a costume (optional)

| Day 5 (Monday) Carnival in Rio |
|
| |
|
 |
Embark in an old wooden schooner,
cruising in the Bay of Rio and below the Sugar Loaf. From the water
the city offers as beautiful a sight as it does from the Christ
statue. (F)

Evening transfer to the carnival
parade in Sambódromo. See now the grandiose, colorful and
ecstatic live spectacle in all its intensity. |

| Day 6 (Tuesday) The Imperial Petrópolis |
|
| |
|
 |
Today you make a trip to
Petrópolis, where the emperor retreated to fresher summers.
You’ll visit the castle (palace), the glass palace and Quitandinha,
a former splendorous Casino.
After the return in the evening visit a ‘bloco’ in the
artists’ neighborhood Santa Teresa, where an ancient tram still
runs. |

| Day 7 (Wednesday) Ash Wednesday - but not over yet |
|
| |
|
| The Cariocas rest from Carnival,
nobody thinks of work this week. On the beach, the dancing and
music continues. Today ou drive over the 14 km long bridge to Niteroi
and visit the futuristic Museum of Modern Art by Oscar Niemeyer.
Then go through the old center of Rio, where the Grand Café Colombo,
and the old city of colorful houses impress. Late afternoon transfer
to the airport.
